District 1 (44.7% D - 29.0% R) - Patty Berg (D) - MAP

This district includes counties: Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, Sonoma, and Trinity. It includes cities: Eureka, Arcata, McKinley Ville, Clearlake, Healdsburg, and Ukiah. The ethnicity in this district is 78% W, 12% L, 1% B, and 2% A. In the 2000 Presidential Election 49% voted for Gore and 38% voted for Bush. Although this area is sparsely populated forest land added to the old AD1, it remains a north coast district extending from Oregon to the borders of Napa Wine Country. This is a Safe Democratic district.

District 2 (32.6% D - 47.8% R) - Doug LaMalfa (R) - MAP

This district includes Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Modoc, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama, and Yolo counties, encompassing the cities of Redding, Red Bluff, and Yuba City. It is 76% W, 15% L, 1% B and 4% A. In the 2000 Presidental Election 30% voted for Gore and 64% voted for Bush. Modoc county was switched onto the previous version of AD2 where the population is concentrated along I 5 from a newly acquire chunk of Yolo county to the Oregon border. George Bush did better here than any other assembly district. This is a Safe Republican district.

District 3 (33.6% D - 42.6% R) - Rick Keene (R) - MAP

This district includes counties: Butte, Lassen, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, sierra, and Yuba. Cities include Chico, Paradise, Truckee, Susanville Grass Valley, Marysville, and Oroville. The ethnicity in this district is as follows: 81% W, 10% L 2% B, 3% A. In the Presidential 2000 election 36% voted for Gore and 56% voted for Bush. Modoc County was dropped for a heavily Republican swath along I-80 between Auburn and Truckee. Though there was a change in land there was not a change in voter registration. This district is Safe Republican.

District 4 (31.7% D - 47.3% R) - Tim Leslie (R) - MAP

This district includes counties Alpine, El Dorado, Placer, and Sacramento. Cities include Roseville, Rocklin, South Lake Tahoe, Auburn, and Placerville. The ethnicity is 79% W 11% L, 3% A. In the Presidential 2000 election 38% voted for Gore, and 57% voted for Bush. This district shrank considerably with the loss of Mono county and mountainous chunks of Amador and Calaveras counties. The contraction was needed to offset the population growth in suburban areas north and east of Sacramento, including newly attached Rio Linda. This district is a Safe Republican district.

District 5 (36.1% D - 43.1% R) - Roger Niello (R) - MAP

This district includes counties Placer and Sacramento. The cities include Citrus Heights, Folsom, and Sacramento. The ethnicity breakdown in this district is as follows, 75% W, 10% L, 5% B, and 5% A. In the Presidential 2000 election 41% voted for Gore and 53% voted for Bush. This primarily conservative and Republican District gained new areas south of I-80 and Granite Bay along the western shore of Folsom Lake. This district is Safe Republican.

District 6 (50.7% D - 24.5% R) - Joe Nation (D) - MAP

This district includes Marin and Sonoma counties. IT includes the cities of San Rafael, Novato, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Mill Valley, and Larkspur. This district is 78% W, 13% L, 2% B, and 5% A. In the 2000 Presidental Election 59% voted for Gore and 30% voted for Bush. Sebastopol was dropped from this district and Sonoma was added. This district is home base for US senator Barbara Boxer. This district is Safe Democrat.

District 7 (50.9% D - 27.0% R) - Noreen Evans (D) - MAP

This district includes Napa, Sonoma, and Solano counties. This district is 59% W, 20% L, 8% B, and 10% A. In the 2000 Presidential Election 59% voted for Gore and 34% voted for Bush. The Sonoma valley wine district was dropped to make room for the reunification of Santa Rosa and Vallejo. District Registration is unchanged. This is a Safe Democratic district.

District 8 (45.1% D - 30.6% R) - Lois Wolk (D) - MAP

This district includes Solano and Yolo county, wIth the cities Santa Rosa, Vallejo, and Napa. This district is 57% W, 21% L, 8% B, 10% A. In the 2000 Presidential Election 53% voted for Gore and 41% voted for Bush. This district was made more compact by cutting some of the Farm land north of Vacaville and Davis. Most of its population brackets I-80 from West Sacramento to Vallejo. This district is Safe Democrat.

District 9 (54.7% D - 21.8% R) - Dave Jones (D) - MAP

This district includes Sacramento county and city. It is 37% W, 23% L, 17% B and 18% A. In the 2000 Presidential Election 62% voted for Gore and 29% voted for Bush. This is an Urban district that is ethnically diverse that makes up 90% of Sacramento and is mostly unchanged. This district is Safe Democrat.

District 10 (37.8% D - 43.5% R) - Alan Nakanishi (R) - MAP

This district includes Amador, El Dorado, Sacramento, and San Joaquin. It includes the cities of Lodi, Elk Grove, Stockton, and Jackson, This district is 64% W, 15% L, 7% B, and 11% A. In 2000 42% voted for Gore, 52% for Bush. This historically very competitive district was much altered. A seat shifted east cutting out some of southern Sacramento’s suburban area, adding high-income Republican areas in El Dorado and Amador counties including El Dorado Hills. Also gone is a chunk of San Joaquin County. Republican registration is slightly up in the district making itseemingly more difficult for Democrats. This district leans Republican.

District 11 (52.6% D - 25.7% R) - Joseph Canciamilla (D) - MAP

This district includes Contra Costa county, and the cities of Concord, Antioch, Pittsburg, Martinez and Pinole. This district is 54% W, 21% L, 9% B and 12% A. In the 2000 Presidential Election 61% voted for gore and 34% voted for Bush. This is an east-west district that stretches from Antioch on the east to Hercules on the west. Pleasant Hill was cut away, while the bulk of El Sobrante was added. A previously orphaned slice of Concord also was reunited with the mother ship. This district is Safe Democrat.

District 12 (52.2% D - 13.6% R) - Leland Yee Ph.D.(D) - MAP

This district includes San Francisco and San Mateo counties. Cities include San Francisco and Daly City. The composition is 34% W, 14% L, 5% B and 44% A. In the 2000 Presidential Election 73% voted for Gore and 20% voted for Bush. This district is home to the largest Asian voting block in the state, and has the highest percentage of those who registered decline to state. This San Francisco district added Daly City, Colma and Broadmoor while losing a wedge of voters who live east of Hwy. 101. This district is Safe Democrat.

District 13 (55.7% D - 10.3% R) - Mark Leno (D) - MAP

This district is comprised of San Francisco City and County. It is 49% W, 16% L, 10% B, and 21% A. In the 2000 Presidental Election 76% voted for Gore and 13% voted for Bush. This district is home to Mayor Willie Brown. This district has nearly twice as many voters registered decline to state as Republicans. This district is Safe Democrat.

District 14 (58.0% D - 15.8% R) - Loni Hancock (D) - MAP

This district includes Alameda, and Contra Costa. It includes the cites of Berkeley, Richmond, Oakland, San Pablo, Pleasant Hill, La Fayette, and El Cerrito. This district is 51% W, 15% L, 16% B, and 15% A. In the 2000 Presidental Election 71% voted for Gore and 20% voted for Bush. Republican Registration nearly doubled as this district shed Oakland and spread into Contra Costa County. Communities such as Pleasant Hill, Moraga, Lafayette, and Orinda. GOP registration still is down by nearly 40 Points because more than half of the district voters live in Berkeley and Richmond, this is a Safe Democratic district.

District 15 (37.6% D - 41.8% R) - Guy S. Houston (R) - MAP

This district includes counties Alameda, Contra Costa, Sacramento, and San Joaquin. The cities include Livermore, Walnut Creek, Danville San Ramon, Elk Grove and Oakley. This district is 73% W, 14% L, 2% B, 9% A. In the 2000 Presidental Election 47% voted for Gore and 49% voted for Bush. AD15 shifted east blending Walnut Creek with Elk Grove, and Danville with a sliver of Stockton. Though some pocket GOP areas were removed Registration remained the same, however republicans still worry because voters in this district tend to be moderate which is why Mc Cain nearly overtook Bush in this district in the 2000 GOP Primary. This district leans Republican.

District 16 (62.0% D - 10.3% R) - Wilma Chan  (D) - MAP

This district is centered in Alameda County. This includes Oakland, Piedmont, and Alameda. 27% W, 21%L, 30% B, and 19% A. In the Presidential 2000 election 77% voted for Gore and 13% voted for Bush. Although this district is ethnically balanced overall, whites and Blacks dominated the ranks of registered voters. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 17 (47.2% D - 39.9% R) - Barbara S. Matthews (D) - MAP

This district includes Merced, San Joaquin, and Stanislaus. It includes the cities of Stockton, Tracy, Merced, Los Banos, and Atwater. This district is 37% W, 42% L, 6% B. and 10% A. In the presidential 2000 election 52% voted for Gore and 44% voted for Bush. This district was overhauled to solidify Dems. The once compact district now looks like Italy. Latinos approach half the population but only a quarter of registered voters. This district is Safe Democrat.

District 18 (54.8% D - 21.7% R) - Johan Klehs (D) - MAP

This district includes Alameda, the cities are Hayward, San Leandro, Pleasanton, Dublin, Oakland. Ethnicity: 42% W, 24% L, 13% B, 17% A. In the 2000 Presidental Election 65% voted for Gore and 29% for Bush. A tinkered-with East Bay distric that lost Union City but added a small chunk of Oakland, more of Pleasanton and all of Dublin. This district is Safe Democrat.

District 19 (50.0% D - 24.1% R) - Gene Mullin (D) - MAP

This district includes San Mateo County and cities of San Mateo, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Pacifica, Daly City, Burlingame and Foster City. Ethnicity: 52% W, 18% L, 3% B, 24% A. In the 2000 Presidential 64% voted for Gore and 31% for Bush. Once a tight wishbone between the Bay and the Pacific south of San Francisco, this much-altered district lost Daly City but added Half Moon Bay and an enormous — but sparsely populated — chunk of San Mateo County west of Hwy. 35 to the Santa Cruz County line. This district is Safe Democrat.

District 20 (47.1% D - 24.3% R) - Alberto Torrico (D) - MAP

This district includes Counties: Alameda, Santa Clara; Cities: Fremont, Milpitas, Newark, Union City. Ethnicity: 38% W, 17% L, 4% B, 37% A. President ‘00: Gore 61%, Bush 34%. Analysis: Union City was added to this Fremont-centered district to compensate for the toss of a slice of San Jose. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 21 (44.0% D - 31.8% R) - Ira Ruskin (D) - MAP

Counties: San Mateo, Santa Clara; Cities: Redwood City, San Jose, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Los Altos, Los Gatos. In the Presidential ’00 election this district voted accordingly: Gore 59%, Bush 35%. Republicans gained slightly when this Peninsula district was streamlined and shoved cast to pick up Los Gatos. The heart of it remains an amalgam of well-heeled Peninsula communities such as Atherton, Woodside and Palo Alto blended with less-affluent East Palo Alto. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 22 (43.4% D - 26.3% R) - Sally J. Lieber (D) - MAP

This district includes Santa Clara County. Cities: Sunnyvale, San Jose, Santa Clara, Mountain View, Cupertino. Ethnicity: 47% W, 14% L, 2% B, 34% A. President ‘00: Gore 60%, Bush 32%. Cupertino and another chunk of Santa Clara were added, giving this Silicon Valley district the third largest Asian population in the Assembly. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 23 (50.5% D - 21.6% R) - Joe Coto (D) - MAP

This district includes Santa Clara County and the city of San Jose. Ethnicity: 19% W, 47% L, 4% B, 27%. A. President ‘00: Gore 67%, Bush 27% Analysis: An elongated San Jose district with Hwy. 101 cleaving it in two. Half the registered voters are Latino and Asian. Bottom line: Safe Democrat.

District 24 (45.0% D - 30.0% R) - Rebecca Cohn (D) - MAP

This district includes Santa Clara county and the cities of San Jose, Campbell, Saratoga and Santa Clara. Ethnicity: 56% W, 18% L, 3% B, 20% A. President '00: Gore 58%, Bush 36%. Analysis: A San Jose-based district altered significantly to strengthen it for Democrats. Cupertino and the Santa Clara county communities of Los Gatos and Monte Sereno were removed, while district boundaries were pushed northeast to take in the Fruitdale, Burbank and Midtown areas north of San Jose, as well as a finger extending into the neighborhoods west of Alum Rock. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 25 (37.0% D - 45.6% R) - Dave Cogdill (R) - MAP

This district includes Calaveras, Madera, Mariposa, Mono, Stanislaus and Tuolumne counties and the cities of Modesto, Oakdale, Riverbank, and Chowchilla. Ethnicity: 71 % W, 19% L, 3% B, 3% A. In the Presidential ’00 election the results were as follows: Gore 39%, Bush 55%. Analysis: Mono County and a slice of Calaveras County Gold Country were added to a district that straddles the central Sierra and slopes into the Central Valley just enough to snare most of Modesto. Bottom Line: Safe Republican.

District 26 (41.8% D - 43.8% R) - Greg Aghazarian (R) - MAP

Counties: San Joaquin, Stanislaus. Cities: Stockton, Manteca, Ceres, Turlock, Modesto. Ethnicity: 52% W, 33% L, 4% B, 8% A. President ‘00: Gore 44%, Bush 51%. Analysis: Republicans gained here when AD 17 was strengthened for Democrats, making this the Assembly’s lone toss-up. Los Banos, Merced and other Hwy. 99 towns were removed in the south, while the eastern third of Stockton was added along with conservative foothill territory in San Joaquin County. Latinos are a third of the population but less than 20% of registered voters. Bottom Line: Toss Up.

District 27 (48.3% D -27.5% R) - John Laird (D) - MAP

Counties: Monterey, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz. Cities: Santa Cruz, Morgan Hill, Seaside, Monterey, Marina, Pacific Grove. Ethnicity: 69% W, 18% L, 3% B, 6% A. President ‘00: Gore 57%, Bush 33%. Analysis: An affluent and scenic central coast district that includes Carmel, Pebble Beach and Big Sur and was changed only by the addition of Morgan Hill along Hwy. 101. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 28 (50.6% D - 29.1% R) - Simon Salinas (D) - MAP

Counties: Monterey, San Benito, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz. Cities: Salinas, Watsonville, Gilroy, Hollister, San Jose. Ethnicity: 28% W, 59% L, 2% B, 9% A. President ‘00: Gore 60%, Bush 35%. Analysis: A mixture of rapidly growing suburbs south of San Jose and inland Monterey County farm towns along Hwy. 101. Morgan Hill was removed to accommodate heavy growth around San Jose. Nearly 40% of registered voters are Latino. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 29 (34.1% D - 51.4% R) - Michael N. Villines (R) - MAP

Counties: Fresno, Madera, Tulare. Cities: Fresno, Clovis, Madera. Ethnicity: 55% W, 30% L, 4% B, 7% A. President ‘00: Gore 37%, Bush 59%. Analysis: A Republican fortress that takes in the Sierras, Kings Canyon National Park and Sequoia National Forest but derives its population base from the northern half of Fresno and newly acquired Madera. Bottom Line: Safe Republican.

District 30 (47.7% D - 39.5% R) - Nicole Parra (D) - MAP

Counties: Fresno, Kern, Kings, Tulare. Cities: Hanford, Delano, Bakersfield, Wasco, Coalinga. Ethnicity: 26% W, 61% L, 7% B, 4% A. This district is a strip along 1-5 on the west and Route 99 on the east. The southern portion of the old district was shaved off and replaced with territory east of Corcoran so that AD 30 now approaches Bakersfield from the north rather than from the south. Latinos are 40% of its registered voters. Bottom Line: Leans Democrat.

District 31 (49.6% D - 38.1% R) - Juan Arambula (D) - MAP

This district includes Counties: Fresno, Tulare. Cities: Fresno, Reedly, Selma, Sanger, Dimiba. Ethnicity: 22% W, 62% L, 6% B, 9% A. President '00: Gore 55%, Bush 41%. Analysis: Another heavily Latino Central Valley enclave, AD 31 used to run north-south. Now it runs east-west, with everything south of Selma and Dinuba having been lopped off. More than 50% of the population lives in the southern half of Fresno. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 32 (30.2% D - 53.8% R) - Kevin McCarthy (R) - MAP

This district includes Counties: Kern, San Bernardino. Cities: Bakersfield, Ridgecrest, Tehachapi. Ethnicity: 65% W, 24% L, 5% B, 3% A. President '00: Gore 31%, Bush 65%. Analysis: The bulk of Bakersfield makes up this Republican bastion that also pushes east. Bottom Line: Safe Republican.

District 33 (36.0% D - 42.7% R) - Sam Blakeslee (R) - MAP

This district includes Counties: San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara. Cities: Santa Maria, Lornpoc, San Luis Obispo, Atascadero, Paso Robles. Ethnicity: 64% W, 27% L, 3% E, 4% A. President '00: Gore 40%, Bush 54%. This district is primarily centered around the city of San Luis Obispo, Primarily white district, with a history of being conservative, however Latinos have been elected in this district. Bottom Line: Safe Republican.

District 34 (33.8% D - 47.8% R) - Bill Maze (R) - MAP

Counties: Inyo, Kern, San Bernardino, Tulare. Cities: Visalia, Tulare, Porterville, Barstow. Ethnicity: 52% W, 38% L, 4% B, 3% A. President '00: Gore 36%, Bush 60%. Analysis: Although still a strong GOP district, one of AD 34's population bases shifted north. Lost were any part of Bakersfield and Tehachapi in Kern County and the San Bernardino County communities of Hesperia and Victorville; added was the bulk of Tulare County. The reigning GOP incumbent's home also was excised, forcing him to run in an adjoining district. Bottom Line: Safe Republican.

District 35 (44.7% D - 31.7% R) - Pedro Nava (D) - MAP

Counties: Santa Barbara, Ventura. Cities: Ventura, Santa Barbara, Oxnard, Carpinteria. Ethnicity: 54% W, 38% L, 2% B, 4% A. President '00: Gore 53%, Bush 39%. Analysis: AD 35 lost most of its Ventura County territory, but virtually none of its Ventura County residents. The district is Santa Barbara/Goleta and Ventura/Oxnard. Latinos make up a third of the district's population but only 18% of its registered voters. Although registration indicates "safe" for Democrats, the GOP will always watch it because Republicans Bill Jones and Chuck Quackenbush carried the district in 1998.

District 36 (35.7% D - 44.6% R) - Sharon Runner (R) - MAP

Counties: Los Angeles, San Bernardino. Cities: Lancaster, Palmdale, Victorville, Adelanto. Ethnicity: 52% W, 30% L, 12% B, 4% A. President '00: Gore Bush 55%. Analysis: AD 36 used to be a spitting image of Oklahoma; now it looks like Ohio. More than half the population lives in a western bulge around Palmdale and Lancaster, with another 20% situated in Victorville and Adelanto to the east. Bottom Line: Safe Republican.

District 37 (34.3% D - 45.1% R) - Audra Strickland (R) - MAP

Cities: Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Simi Valley, Los Angeles, Moorpark. Ethnicity: 67% W, 23% L, 2% B, 6%. A President '00: Gore 43%, Bush 51 %. Analysis: Once a Ventura County coastal district, the new version never quite touches the water but skirts inland to encompass Thousand Oaks, wanders north of Santa Clarita then takes a large portion of the unpopulated portion of Los Angeles County from the I-5 Grapevine to Castaic Lake. Bottom Line: Safe Republican.

District 38 (35.1% D - 44.1% R) - Keith Richman (R) - MAP

Counties: Los Angeles, Ventura. Cities: Los Angeles, Santa Clarita, Simi Valley. Ethnicity: 65% W, 20% L, 3% B, 9% A. President '00: Gore 44%, Bush, 50%. Analysis: Santa Clarita and residential neighborhoods surrounding, but not including, San Fernando join with two-thirds of Simi Valley to form a district dramatically strengthened for the GOP. Bottom Line: Safe Republican.

District 39 (58.7% D - 19.2% R) - Cindy Montanez (D) - MAP

Counties: Los Angeles. Cities: Los Angeles, San Fernando. Ethnicity: 13% W, 74% L, 4% B, 7% A. President '00: Gore 69%, Bush 24%. Analysis: Two freeways -1-405 and 1-210 bracket this San Fernando Valley district split in two by yet another freeway, 1-5. More than half of registered voters are Latino. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 40 (48.0% D - 29.6% R) - Lloyd E. Levine (D) - MAP

Counties: Los Angeles. Cities: Los Angeles. Ethnicity: 42% W, 39% L, 5% B, 12% A. President '00: Gore 59%, Bush 34%. Analysis: Republicans gained some registration as the district shifted west, losing territory between I-405 and the Hollywood Fwy, but pushing north of Roscoe Blvd around CSU-Northridge, and west and south of Topanga Canyon Rd. Latinos are nearly 40% of the population but only 16% of registered voters. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 41 (48.0% D - 29.2% R) - Fran Pavley (D) - MAP

Counties: Los Angeles, Ventura. Cities: Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Calabasas. Ethnicity: 67% W, 20% L, 3% B, 8% A. President '00: Gore 62%, Bush 32%. Analysis: A coastal district that stretches along the Pacific from newly acquired Oxnard and Port Hueneme in Ventura County to Santa Monica in Los Angeles Count. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 42 (54.0% D - 20.7% R) - Paul Koretz (D) - MAP

Counties: Los Angeles. Cities: Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood. Ethnicity: 75% W, 10% L, 4% B, 8% A. President '00: Gore 72%, Bush 21%. Analysis: A chunk of Los Angeles that was pushed north to Burbank Blvd, but stripped of the piece of its southern flank that includes UCLA. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 43 (44.6% D - 30.7% R) - Dario Frommer (D) - MAP

Counties: Los Angeles. Cities: Glendale, Los Angeles, Burbank. The ethnicity of this district is 50% W, 29% L, 3% B, 12% A. In the presidential 2000 election 56% voted for Gore and 36% voted for Bush. Democrats reinforced this district a 2000 battleground, by extending a finger west of Vineland Ave. The district also lost neighborhoods between Forest Lawn and Occidental college. Latinos and Asians make up 41% of the population but 22% of registered voters. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 44 (45.4% D -32.2% R) - Carol Liu (D) - MAP

County: Los Angeles. Cities: Pasadena, Los Angeles, Arcadia, and Temple City. Ethnicity: 38% W, 30% L, 10% B, 20% A. President '00: Gore 56%, Bush 37%. Analysis: An ethnically diverse district that stretches along I-210 from La Canada-Flintridge on the west to Duarte on the east and anchored in the south by Pasadena. The addition of Arcadia and Los Angeles neighborhoods around Occidental College give a slight boost to Democratic registration. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 45 (58.2% D - 15.3% R) - Jackie Goldberg (D) - MAP

County: Los Angeles. City: Los Angeles. Ethnicity: 12% W, 68% L, 2% B, 16% A. President '00: Gore 75%, Bush 16%. A mid-Los Angeles district centered on Elysian Park and Dodger Stadium and anchored on the south by a newly added chunk of East Los Angeles. More than half of registered voters are Latino in the home base of former Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 46 (65.4% D - 11.6% R) - Fabian Nunez (D) - MAP

This district in the county of Los Angeles includes the city Los Angeles, Huntington Park, and Maywood. The ethnicity of this district is 4% W, 85% L, 6% B, 4% A. In the 2000 Presidential election 81% voted for Gore and 11% Voted for Bush. This district is the Assembly's third most Democratic district. This district has the highest amount of Latino residents and voters in the state. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 47 (65.0% D - 12.7% R) - Karen Bass (D) - MAP

This district in Los Angeles county includes the cities of Los Angeles and Culver city. This district is 29% W, 26% L, 31% B, 12%A. In the 2000 Presidental Election 79% voted for Gore and 14% for Bush. This district is ethnically balanced and dominated by blacks. AD 47 is unchanged with the exception of a small bulge on the northwest that includes UCLA. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 48 (71.5% D - 8.4% R) - Mark Ridley-Thomas (D) - MAP

This district includes Los Angeles County and City. This district is 5% W, 52% L, 30% B, 12% A. In the Presidential 2000 election 86% voted for Gore and 7% voted for Bush. This district is the second most Democratic Assembly district. Although Latinos are 52% of the population they make up only 18% of the registered voters, leaving the political high ground to blacks for the moment. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 49 (46.5% D - 26.1% R) - Judy Chu (D) - MAP

This district in the county of Los Angeles includes the cities of El Monte, Alhambra, Monterey Park, Rosemead, and San Gabriel. This district is 12% W, 47% L, 1% B, and 39% A. In 2000 61% voted for Gore and 32% voted for Bush. AD 49 shifted east losing all things Los Angeles west of Alhambra but gaining most of El Monte and South El Monte, San Marino and East San Gabriel. Latinos are 36% of the registered voters, while 28% are Asian. This district: Safe Democratic.

District 50 (61.4% D - 18.0% R) - Hector De La Torre (D) - MAP

This district in Los Angeles county includes the cities of South Gate, Lynwood, Bellflower, Bell Gardens, Downey, and Bell. This district is 11% W, 79% L, 1%B, 39% A. In 2000 71% voted for Gore and 22% for Bush. This district snakes through Latino territory from Commerce in the north to Bellflower in the south. This district: Safe Democrat.

District 51 (63.5% D - 16.7% R) - Jerome Horton (D) - MAP

This district in Los Angeles County includes the cities Inglewood, Hawthorne, Los Angeles, Gardena, and Lawndale. This district is 14% W, 44%L, 32%B, 8% A.In 2000 74% voted Gore, 20% Bush. In this district Latino population is rising but the biggest bloc of registered voters is black. This district is Safe Democrat.

District 52 (72.5% D - 8.6% R) - Mervyn M. Dymally (D) - MAP

This district in Los Angeles County includes the cities Los Angeles, Compton, Paramount, and Long Beach. This district is 3%W, 65% L, 29% B, 1% A. In 2000 86% voted for Gore and 8% voted for Bush. This is one of the states least Republican areas. This district is heavily dominated by blacks, although Latinos are gaining population and registered voters. This district is Safe Democrat.

District 53 (40.9% D - 34.6% R) - Ted Lieu (D) - MAP

The district includes the communities of El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Lomita, Manhattan Beach, Mar Vista, Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Venice, Westchester and parts of West Los Angeles. This district is 61% W, 17% L, 3% B, 17% A. In 2000 53% Voted for Gore and 40% for Bush. This competitive district sits along the coast from Santa Monica to Palos Verdes Estates, includes LAX and a Chevron refinery. Though competitive this district leans Democrat.

District 54 (43.8% D - 35.0% R) - Betty Karnette (D) - MAP

This district is in Los Angeles County. This district includes Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Rancho Palos Verdes. 50% W, 25%, 9%L, 12% A. In the 2000 Presidental Election 53% voted for Gore and 41% voted for Bush. This district is competitive centered on the port of Long Beach. AD 53 is virtually unchanged. It has been an expensive battleground in the past and could be once again, once the current Democratic incumbent is out. This district leans Democrat.

District 55 (54.7% D - 24.3% R) - Jenny Oropeza (D) - MAP

This district in Los Angeles County includes Long Beach, Los Angeles, Carson, and Lakewood. This district is 21% W, 45% L, 15% B, and 15% Asian. In the presidential 2000 election 63% voted for Gore and 30% voted for Bush. Republican registration jumped in this district when the eastern boundary was pushed in to Lakewood to help Democratic fortunes in troublesome AD 56. A chunk of Compton was removed as well. A quarter of the district's registered voters are Latino. Bottom Line: Safe Democrat.

District 56 (49.0% D - 29.5% R) - Rudy Bermudez (D) - MAP

This district lies in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. It includes the cities of Norwalk, Buena Park, Cerritos, and Whittier. This district is 24% W, 52% L, 4% B, and 18% A. In the presidential 2000 election 58% voted for Gore and 37% for Bush. Democrats apparently had enough battles in the old AD 56 and thus created an entirely new district. Artesia now sits in the west. Bellflower, once the center, has been removed as have Downey and most of Lakewood. Santa Fe springs and South Whittier were added to the top while at the bottom the district dips into Orange to capture Buena Park. This district: Safe Democrat.

District 57 (50.4% D - 29.0% R) - Edward Chavez (D) - MAP

This district is in Los Angeles County. It includes the cities if West Covina, Baldwin Park, Azusa, Covina, and La Puente. This district is 19%W, 63% L, 4% B, and 12% A. In the presidential 2000 election Gore received 61% of the vote and Bush 33%. This district once centered on El Monte has been transported east along I-10 to now center on West Covina. Hacienda Heights was removed along with El Monte. This district is Safe Democrat.

District 58 (53.0% D - 27.4% R) - Ronald S. Calderon (D) - MAP

This district in Los Angeles County includes the cities of Downey, Montebello, Pico Rivera, and Whittier. This district is 18% W, 67% L 1% B, 12% A. In the 2000 Presidental Election Gore received 61% of the vote and Bush 33%. AD 58 was recast on the mapmakers forge extending southwest to gather in Downey but ceding Norwalk in the south and South El Monte in the north. Hacienda Heights was also added. As a result the spread between Republicans and Democrats was narrowed, but not enough to make it competitive. This is a Safe Democratic district.

District 59 (33.1% D - 47.7% R) - Dennis Mountjoy (R) - MAP

This district is the Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties. It includes the cities of Hesperia, Apple Valley, Glendora, Claremont, San Dimas, La Verne and San Bernardino. This district is 65% W, 21% L, 5% B, and 7% Asian. In the presidential 2000 election 40% voted for Gore and 54% voted for Bush. The population was split evenly between two counties when map makers added the San Bernardino communities of Apple Valley and Hesperia to what had been an exclusively LA district. The result: more firmly Republican than its predecessor, also takes in a huge chunk of the Angeles National Forest and Lake Arrowhead. This district is Safe Republican.

District 60 (30.4% D - 48.3% R) - Bob Huff (R) - MAP

This district in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino Counties includes the cities of Chino Hills, Diamond Bar, Anaheim, La Mirada, Orange, Yorba, Linda, and La Habra. This district is 47% W, 24% L, 3% B, and 24% A. In the Presidential 2000 election 39% voted for Gore and 56% voted for Bush. This district was once a competitive district confined to LA County, AD 60 shed West Covina, Hacienda Heights and most of Whittier while sliding into San Bernardino County to pick up the GOP strong hold in Chino Hills and dipping into Orange County for half of Yorba Linda and a tidy slice of Anaheim. As a result, a 5% Democratic registration edge was turned on its head. This District: Safe Republican district.

District 61 (47.8% D - 33.8% R) - Gloria Negrete McLeod (D) - MAP

This district in the counties of Los Angeles San Bernardino includes the cities of Ontario, Pomona, Chino, and Montclair. This district is 25% W, 59% L, 8% B, 6% A. In the Presidential 2000 election, 56% voted for Gore and 38% voted for Bush. If Republicans were made safer in AD 60, this was the Democratic answer in AD 61. Chino Hills was removed while the rest of Pomona was added increasing the registration edge for the Democrats from 11-19 points. This is a Safe Democratic district.

District 62 (52.8% D - 29.4% R) - Joe Baca, Jr. (D) - MAP

This district in San Bernardino County includes the cities of Fontana, Rialto, San Bernardino, and Colton. This district is 21% W, 60% L, 14% B, and 3% A. In the Presidential 2000 election, 65% voted for Gore and 29% for Bush. Stretched along I-10 it blends the industrial areas of Fontana with Rialto Colton and the southern half of San Bernardino. This district is Safe Republican.

District 63 (35.6% D - 46.1% R) - Bill Emmerson (R) - MAP

This district in Riverside and San Bernardino counties includes the cities of Rancho Cucamonga, Redlands, Upland, San Bernardino, and Highland. This district is 21% W, 60% L, 14% B, 3% A. In the 2000 Presidental Election, 44% voted for Gore and 50% for Bush. This district is tinkered with to ensure the Republican advantage. This district is a Safe Republican.

District 64 (33.6% D - 47.4% R) - John J. Benoit (R) - MAP

This district in Riverside County includes the cities of Riverside, Moreno Valley, and Palm Desert. This district is 55% W, 29% L, 9% B, and 5% A. In the 2000 Presidental Election, 44% voted for Gore and 51% for Bush. The old AD 64 was retained in the northwest corner of the new district represented by pieces of the city of Riverside. The rest of the district's new territory all bolts south along I-15 to skirt Lake Elsinore then sprawls east across the desert to anchor on Palm Desert, Indian Wells and Rancho Mirage. This district is Safe Republican.

District 65 (34.7% D - 46.9% R) - Russ Bogh (R) - MAP

This district in Riverside and San Bernardino counties includes the cities of Moreno Valley, Hemet, Yucaipa, Perris, Banning and San Jacinto. This district is 61% W, 27% L, 6% B, and 3% A. In 2000, 42% voted for Gore and 53% voted for Bush. An enormous chunk was removed from this district in north San Bernardino County, as was half of the heavily populated Moreno Valley on the west. Hemet and Perris were added as the district pushed south along the crowded corridor of I-215. This district: Safe Republican.

District 66 (28.4% D - 51.1% R) - Ray Haynes (R) - MAP

This district in Riverside and San Diego County includes the cities of Riverside, Temecula, Murrieta, and Lake Elsinore. This district is 56% W, 33% L, 4% B, and 4% A. In 2000 38% voted for Gore and 58% for Bush. This district retreats from the desert communities between Lake Elsinore and La Quinta, but slides north to take in about a third of the city of Riverside and all of Rubidoux. This district: Safe Republican.

District 67 (31.2% D - 47.3% R) - Vacant - MAP

This district is in Orange County and it includes the cities of Huntington Beach, Anaheim, Cypress and Westminster. This district is 62% W, 10% L, 2% B, 15% A. In the 2000 Presidential Election, 40% voted for Gore and 54% voted for Bush. Coastal Orange County with an inland dinger reaching up to Cypress and Stanton. Bottom Line: Safe Republican.

District 68 (31.4% D - 45.7% R) - Van Tran (R) - MAP

This district in Orange County includes the cities of Costa Mesa, Garden Grove Westminster, Fountain Valley and Anaheim. This district is 42% W, 29% L, 1% B, and 25% A. In 2000, 42% voted for Gore and 52% voted for Bush. AD 68 was strengthened for Republicans by shoving it toward the water removing Buena Park in the north and adding Fountain Valley and Costa Mesa in the south. Latinos and Asians makeup more than 50% of the population; however, less than a third of them are registered. Safe Republican.

District 69 (46.4% D - 33.7% R) - Tom Umberg (D) - MAP

This district in Orange County includes Santa Ana, Anaheim, and Garden Grove. This district is 13% W, 74% L, 1%B, and 10% A. In 2000, 58% voted for Gore and 37% for Bush. This is one of the Assembly’s most Latino districts. In 1996 there was a Republican representative; however this is no longer the case. This district is Safe Democrat.

District 70 (27.9% D - 49.1% R) - Chuck DeVore (R) - MAP

This district in Orange County includes the cities of Irvine, Newport Beach, Tustin, and Lake Forest. This district is 66% W, 13% L, 2% B, and 18% A. In 2000, 40% voted for Gore and 56% voted for Bush. This Orange county Coast was created to keep this area a safe-haven for the Republicans.

District 71 (26.6% D - 53.7% R) - Todd Spitzer (R) - MAP

This district including Orange and Riverside County includes the cities of Corona, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, Orange and Norco. This district is 63% W, 24% L, 3% B, and 8% A. In 2000, 36% voted for Gore and 60% voted for Bush. This district is the state's most Republican Assembly District and lost a chunk of Anaheim but gained Corona in Riverside County. This district is Safe Republican.

District 72 (31.8% D - 48.0% R) - Lynn Daucher (R) - MAP

This district in Orange County includes the cities of Fullerton, Anaheim, Placentia, Orange, Bream and Yorba Linda. This district is 46% W, 38% L, 2% B, and 11% A. In 2000, 39% voted for Gore and 56% voted for Bush. This district was manipulated to keep it a Republican zone. With Anaheim anchoring the south, the rest of the district is a triangle with Fullerton and Placentia at the base and top. This district is Safe Republican.

District 73 (26.7% D - 50.3% R) - Mimi Walters (R) - MAP

This district in Orange and San Diego County includes the cities of Oceanside, Laguna Niguel, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point and Laguna Hills. This district is 65% W, 22% L, 4% B, and 6% A. This district went to Bush in the 2000 Presidential Election with 57% of the vote going to him, and 38% to Gore. This district captures the coastline in Orange County, from Laguna Niguel to Oceanside in the south. This district: Safe Republican.

District 74 (28.9% D - 46.1% R) - Mark Wyland (R) - MAP

This district in San Diego County includes the cities of Vista, Carlsbad, Escondido, Encinitas, and San Marcos. This district is 65% W, 26% L, 2% B, and 5% A. In 2000, 40% voted for Gore and 54% for Bush. This coastal county stretched far inland to Escondido and north to take all of Vista. The Latino population is somewhat of an illusion since they only make up 9% of the registered voters. This district is a Safe Republican district.

District 75 (29.0% D - 44.2% R) - George A. Plescia (R) - MAP

This district in San Diego County includes the cities of San Diego, Escondido and Poway. This district is 64% W, 13% L, 2% B, and 18% A. In 2000, 42% voted for Gore and 53% voted for Bush, This district touches the pacific near UC San Diego. The district contains some of San Diego’s most notable land marks. This is a Safe Republican district.

District 76 (39.9% D - 30.7% R) - Lori Saldana (D) - MAP

This district includes San Diego city and county. This district is 62% W, 21% L, 6% B, and 8% A. In 2000, 54% voted for Gore and 38% voted for Bush. This district skirts the northern edge of San Diego harbor and includes downtown San Diego, the airport, Mission Bay and Balboa Park. This district leans Democrat.

District 77 (30.1% D - 46.7% R) - Jay LaSuer (R) - MAP

This district in San Diego county includes the cities of El Cajon, La Mesa, Santee, and San Diego. This district is 75% W, 15% L, 3% B, and 4% A. In 2000, 37% voted for Gore and 56% voted for Bush. This used to be a compact urban district, but now it is a desert district. Though there was a shift in the area most of the population is still concentrated in the same area, now the district's south west corner. This district: Safe Republican.

District 78 (41.5% D - 35.3% R) - Shirley Horton (R) - MAP

The district in San Diego County includes the cities of San Diego, Chula Vista and Lemon Grove. This district is 39% W, 28% L, 13% B, and 17% A. In 2000, 51% voted for Gore and 43% voted for Bush. This is the only district to contain not one precinct of its former self. AD 78 had proves a troublesome battleground throughout the 90’s and Democrats dealt with the problem by simply obliterating it and shifting the number inland. AD 78 had sliced along the coast from Del Mar and La Jolla in the north. Although competitive, it leans Democratic.

District 79 (46.1% D - 29.4% R) - Juan Vargas (D) - MAP

This district in San Diego County includes the cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach, and Coronado. This district is 24% W, 57% L, 8% B, and 9% A. In 2000, 56% voted for Gore and 37% for Bush. Bottom line: Safe Democrat.

District 80 (46.0% D - 38.5% R) - Bonnie Garcia (R) - MAP

This District Includes San Diego and Imperial Counties. It includes Indio, Cathedral City and El Centro. This district is 33% W, 60% L, 4% B, and 2% A. In 2000, Gore got 52% of the vote and Bush 43%. More than a third of the registered voters are Latino here. Recently retired is a 23 veteran Republican. Though this is somewhat of a competitive district it leans Democratic.
