The data file breaks both population and voting-age population up by race and by Hispanic origin. The variable names are listed below, but the naming convention is fairly simple: 1) Every racial category is divided between Hispanics and non-Hispanics. The Hispanic version will start with "H" while the non-Hispanic category starts with "NH". So "HWH" counts all one-race white Hispanics, and "NHWH" counts all one-race white non-Hispanics; combined they would include all one-race whites. 2) Single-race categories have two-letter abbreviations: whites (WH), blacks (BL), native Americans (NT), Asians (AS), Pacific Islanders (PC), and other races (OT). So non-Hispanic Asians would be "NHAS". 3) Double-race categories include the first letter for each race separated by an underscore. So, for example, Hispanics who counted themselves as partly white and partly black would be "HW_B". 4) People who reported three or more races were collected in an omnibus category: Hispanics with three or more races (HPL3) and non-Hispanics with three or more races (NHPL3). 5) For every population category, there is a parallel Variable reporting that population category only among those who are voting-age population. For the VAP, the variable name ends in "18". Voting district population: TOTP is the total population. Non-Hispanics: NHWH is the number of non-Hispanic Whites (single-race only).
