Documentation - Description of Geographic Coverage

The geographic coverage is the larger geographic unit that contains all the geographic units.


A. State of California- The largest geographic coverage used by the SWDB is the State of California. The designation for the state of California is either S06 or ST06 (This is derived from the Census Bureau, standing for State 6. California is the sixth state, when organized alphabetically).


B. County- Counties are the level of government between the State and individual cities and municipalities. There are 58 counties in California, varying in size and population. Counties are numbered in two ways. First, counties are organized in alphabetical order and numbered. Second, counties are given a FIPS code by the Census Bureau, which is the county's alphabetical number, times two, minus one. The designation for county is CY.


C. Assembly District- The Assembly is the lower house in the California legislature. There are 80 Assembly Districts of approximately the same size . These districts are redrawn every ten years following the census. The designation for Assembly Districts is AD.


D. Senate District- The Senate is the upper house in the California legislature. There are 40 Senate Districts of approximately the same size . These districts are redrawn every ten years following the census. The designation for Senate Districts is SD.


E. Congressional District- Congressional Districts are the districts from which members of the U.S. House of Representatives are elected. California currently has 52 Congressional Districts of approximately the same size . These districts are reapportioned and redrawn every ten years following the census. The designation for Congressional Districts is CD.
